The Queen of Hearts Ornament Design Process
“Off with her head! Off—” These are the first words that The Queen of Hearts utters when she sees Alice for the first time. I decided to capture this dramatic moment in my design of the Queen of Hearts figurine. With this intention, I diligently studied the illustrations in the original edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
I created The Queen of Hearts holding a scepter with a heart-shaped finial that represents her Kingdom of Hearts. I gave her a “v” shape neckline based on the illustrations I had examined. Additionally, I decorated her neckline with a band and brooch. Finally, I topped her head with a headdress that consists of a scarf and a crown just like the illustrations. As a final point, I chose red, black, and dark yellows as the color palette for her garments, resembling the same coloring of the traditional Bicycle brand playing cards.
